The More Something Scares You, The More You Should Do It

The more something scares you, the more you should probably do it. Stop making excuses.

We’re stopped from doing the things we know we should for two reasons. One, they’re hard. Why would we purposely want to do what’s hard when we can stay in the cozy bed of complacency? Doing things that are hard are uncomfortable. They challenge us and create an opportunity to fail at something we already question our ability to do.

Reason number two why we don’t do what scares us is because we don’t believe we’re good enough to do it. The lack of ability is a scary concept to embrace. Again, we can’t help but ask, “What if I fail?”

We stay in the same job because finding a new one might expose the lack of skill we have. We stay in relationships because we’re afraid it’ll be too hard to find someone else.

We are so afraid of doing what we have to do that we stay in the same space facing the same challenges and knowing in the back of our minds that we want more.

If it scares you, you should probably do it. That isn’t advice that’s meant to hurt you. It’s a reminder that your fear can push us forward as effectively as it can hold us back. I come across numerous singles who don’t want to date because they’re afraid yet the want to be loved desperately.

We make excuses for why we can’t step out of our comfort zone. We’ll get hurt, we’ll lose our security, we’ll be embarrassed or worse we’ll get what we want and still feel miserable.

The only way to overcome that fear that’s so debilitating it renders you unable to act is the envision the life that you live as so excruciating that you must do something to change it.

It can no longer be OK to stay unloved and unconnected. It can no longer be acceptable to stay inside your shell. You have to move beyond your comfort zone in order to get what you want. And you really really want it. Don’t deny yourself what you want the most. If it scares you it’s because it’s important.
