Online Dating Etiquette: How To Reject Your Matches

Saying no isn’t easy.

In fact, it takes a lot of guts and courage to turn down a proposal (any proposal) in dating. You don’t want to come across as rude, or full of yourself. And you certainly don’t want to piss other people off and deal with the backlash of their anger towards your rejection.

When it comes to online dating,  and requests are coming in from different people, the task of saying no goes from bad to worse because you never know how the other person will takes things when you reject them. It is one of the most awkward situations when someone proposes to you and you have to say no on an online dating website. We all know that rejection is not very well taken as well as not very well delivered.

The easiest solution is to be polite. Whether you feel offended or angered by the proposal itself, politeness is well counted when it comes to saying no to someone. If only saying “No, thanks” would be enough life would be much easier. However, that’s not how our ego works, so you have be a little more tactful than that.

If you are facing such a problem, or want to be safe from falling into such a situation, you can always refer to the below-mentioned ways that can help you reject your admirer with grace and without guilt.

How to say “No” to the messages itself.

Decline the request in the first place. Online dating is all about sending requests to suitable people whom you find appealing. There is no hard and fast rule that you have to accept every request that comes by. Filter the requests and avoid any further texts from the same person. If you want to take an extra step to ensure no hard feelings you go out of your way to be polite. What more you can do is – DO NOT like any of the person’s photographs than send a polite text stating that “thank you for showing interest in my profile, but I don’t think we’re an ideal match”.  This would be humble and considerate of the hard work the person has done sending you the request.

Don’t be afraid to block someone if the messages don’t stop coming

You would have said a polite “No,” but there are times when the other person won’t stop messaging you. You don’t have to take any kind of action against them or even revert with hate messages. All you have to do is – block the profile from your list (which is possible on every online dating site) and delete all the messages sent from the respective person. This way, you’d be able to avoid the person trying to contact you.

You can also send a polite message in reply stating that you’ve already found someone of your choice and are no longer interested in having any other relationship. Yes, sometimes a white lie is all it takes to end unwanted conversations. While we should all be adult enough to accept a “No,” in the first place, that’s not always the case once egos get involved.

How to say “No” when you’ve had your first date

You should know that saying “No,” to a person after the first date can be a terrible thing – for them as well as for you. Even if you had a great time, but you just don’t feel like there is any chemistry, declining a second date is never comfortable. However, just because you cannot say “No,” you cannot end up signing up for a relationship that you know will not bloom. As difficult as it might be, leading someone on is even worse.

You have to confront them in person or via phone.

If you stop all contact with the person without conveying your thoughts to them after the first date that would be considered rude. What you need to do is – text the person and thank them for all the efforts that they put in arranging the date and spending the day. Though you enjoyed yourself a lot, you don’t find that romantic connection building with them. Hence, it would be better if you didn’t see each other again.

All you need is compassion and politeness when you say “No,” to the other person. Online dating is all about the hit & trial method, but that’s not the reason that you can be rude to the person on any grounds. And you shouldn’t expect them to be rude to you. If you live by the theory what you get is what you give, by letting others done politely, you should accept a kind response. And if you don’t, then you’ll know for sure that you did the right thing.
